Yes, I saw it, and also the post on the Internet giant Cafemom that started out “You May Have Insulted This Little Girl Without Realizing It” with a picture of Maura. I did a double-take. This is getting big–but it couldn’t happen to a nicer lady (who is also a great writer)!

While I did not have any cognitively challenged children of my own, I taught special education for more than twenty-five years and was known for zero tolerance for the word “retard” at school and at home. Once with my two children, I was play-acting an old lady who was “slightly-retarded”, (in my own words! My family never let me hear the end of it (for good reason!) and I was so upset with myself. It just goes to show how deep this name-calling is in our culture and how unaware we are as a society that even the most diligent of us have difficulty extricating it from our sub-conscious! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!

Yes, I did….it’s what brought me straight to your blog, snagged me as a follower of your blog and had me sharing your entry on my Facebook page 🙂 I have several friends with Down’s Syndrome siblings or children who now think you are as amazing a person and mother as I do!! Looking very forward to more of your insight and wit. Thank you!
