May is Maura Awareness Month

30 Apr

Yes, I decided a couple of years ago that since Maura is a conundrum, that I’d claim May as her very own awareness month, as her birthday is in May.

You can do things like that when you have no real diagnosis and a blog 🙂

This May, I will be posting our journey with Maura – from birth to present day – to help explain what life is like with a special needs child like Maura, who has moderate cognitive disabilities with some medical and physical issues.   I’ve always been told I should write our story, and this May, I will be doing just that.

I think that’s a fabulous idea. It’s frustrating for you, as a parent, to know *something* is wrong but not have any sort of clear-cut diagnosis. Then you throw school into the mix where teachers want your child to have some sort of clear-cut diagnosis so they have some sort of idea what they’re going to be dealing with instead of having to learn right along with her. Of course, no child is exactly the same so even if Maura did have a specific diagnosis, she wouldn’t be like any other child anyway. ::sigh::

Fantastic idea…can’t wait to read it! Am very curious to find out more about your story/journey…. because from what I have read so far I feel that my daughter Martha is very very similar to Maura (although she is only 3 at the moment..) and somehow it helps me to draw parallels and ‘prepare’ myself for what there might is to come. …
I’d be particularly intersted in certain behaviours she has show over the years …mainly because we have a biting/pulling eras and hair issue at the moment and I just don’t know how to deal with it…as Martha does not understand ‘no’ as a concept and all that… well, sorry to bamble on…I am just happy that you do this!…so thanks and Happy Maura May…and Happy Birthday.
